Jeseníky

Did you know that?

Around 1471, the town of Gesenke ceased to exist along with Castle Fürstenwalde (Prince's forest), according to which the adjacent valley was also named. The name was gradually used for the entire mountain range and the Czech form of the word "Jeseníky" may thereby be its Czech version of it. However, theories exist that the Jeseníky is an authentic Czech name meaning "jesenné hory" (autumny mountains) – a peak covered with ash tree groves.

The Jeseníky Mountains – high rocky hillside and picturesque valleys, from where it seems as if the local mountains touch the skies... Although the second highest mountain range in the Czech Republic in the northernmost tip of Moravia is a protected landscape area with several nature reserves, it lives with the business of the tourism industry. Hundreds of kilometres of very well marked hiking, cycling and skiing trails and nature trails offer you the most beautiful corners of the mountains in the palm of your hand. Not to mention the observation towers, from which you receive a breathtaking view of the landscape (Háj, Zlatý Chlum, Biskupská kupa etc.). The entire area is exceptional not only for its wealth of natural wonders such as peat bogs with moss lakes, mountain torrents and waterfalls or unique rock formations, but also interesting technical and cultural monuments, which include a number of chateaus and castle ruins, special museum exhibits, Peter's Stones backed with witch legends or the timeless Priessnitz Spa. The Jeseníky Mountains are prepared for tourists – plenty of accommodation and catering facilities, ski buses and rentals of all sorts of equipment!
