Ostrava region

Did you know that?

According to experts, the original Ostravan dialect is the Central Aš dialect connecting elements of Czech, Polish and Slovak with German truncations. In practice this means that it is a quick language, where the words are pronounced briefly and decisively. Word inflection, pronunciation of the letter y and i, or use of prepositions is specific.

Ostrava – an industrial and university city ranks among the largest cities in CR in terms of size and population. It used to be referred to as "black". However, that no longer applies today. A large part of the city is covered by greenery and technical monuments of recent mining history are now a large attraction for tourists. Ostrava is considered a business and cultural centre of the region. Here you will find large shopping centres and exhibition centres, luxury hotels, pleasant cafes and theatres. The observation tower of the new city hall will show you the entire city at the palm of your hands. A popular destination is Ostrava's ZOO and the exhibitions grounds called Černá louka with a number of different exhibitions (The World of Miniatures, the Puppet Theatre etc.). The venue for many events is also the Silesian Ostravan castle or renowned Stodolní Street. The sports and ski resort Vaňkův Hill is also nearby and the Klimkovice Spa offers relaxation, or try out beer and wine baths at Zábřeh Chateau.
